Rosemarys Restaurant closes and ends an era of Gourmet Dining off the Strip in Las Vegas, Thanks for the Memories

Las Vegas suffered yet another tremendous loss with the closing of Rosemary's Restaurant. This piece will be difficult at times to write. As journalists we try not to let emotion and opinion creep into our writing , but this is very personal and we feel we have suffered the loss of a great friend. We have received many emails and phone calls from as far away as New York and esteemed winemakers from California saying " Please say its not so " . But sadly it is.

Rosemary's Restaurant was a one of a kind and an icon off the strip for 14 years. We personally have celebrated Anniversary's , birthdays , Holidays , Artist receptions , Wine and Beer dinners and sent a son off too Iraq and brought him safely home with Chef Michael Jordan and his staff at our table side. We have had countess great times and as we prepared for theCourt of Masters Exam did blind wine tastings all with this very good friend. The servers were not just servers and bartenders not just bartenders but friends for years. We have shared our lives with them and them with us. Rosemary's was not just your ordinary restaurant but a very special place where we knew our good friend would take care of us year after year, with consistency.

Our last visit was a typical one. We were greeted with the effervescent smile of the hostess, "good evening Mr and Mrs Harris we have your table ready to go " . Walked by the standing room only Bar with all the "usual" gang that we have seen there for years and seated at "our table " . The always pleasing Shannon and Michael Jones " Mr Jones " waving from the bar and getting ready to pour our usual Bombay Sapphire Dirty Martinis . Server after server would stop by just for a quick "hello, how are you Mr Harris , Mrs Harris ? " even though we were not in their section and we have told them for years to please call us by our first names. Chef Michael would stop by to say hello and then back to the kitchen to create some of the best dishes Las Vegas had to offer on and off the strip.

Yes, Rosemary's is closed and will never be forgotten by us. It was the last of the "TRUE" gourmet restaurants complete with linen table cloths and simultaneous service not to be found too many places off the strip. We are in mourning not just for us but for Las Vegas as well. The days of the gourmet fine dining restaurants off the strip are over and being replaced by chain restaurants with questionable service and mediocre food at best.

Good Bye to our good friend and best of luck to Chefs Michael and Wendy Jordan and thank you for the years of great dishes and most of all Thanks for the Memories.

Wirtz Beverage Nevada, Rudi Wiest Selections and Lotus of Siam team up for a showcase of the 2010 German Vintage for Las Vegas’ Top Sommeliers and Restaurateurs.

The industries top sommeliers and wine enthusiasts joined Wirtz Beverage Nevada and Crush Wines in a special tasting of the Rudi West portfolio of German Riesling. The event, which was held at the renowned Lotus of Siam in Las Vegas and showed off the new 2010 vintages. Guests were able to sample cuisine from James Beard award winning Chef Saipin Chutima which paired nicely with the crisp acidity and residual sugar of the Rieslings. Wine makers and producers from Monchof, Karthauserhof, Schloss Schonborn and Zilliken flew in specifically for the chance to showcase the 2010 Vintage from the finest wine producing regions in Germany.

Lotus of Siam Tahi Steak Tartare

Having them pour their own wines gave guests a rare opportunity to gain in depth knowledge and understanding of the wines and their terrior from the men and women who make them.

Rudy Wiest

Rudi Wiest Selections is a leading importer of fine German wines in the United States market. Since 1978 their sole focus has been rebuilding the image of legendary Germany wine estates through education of consumers and the wine trade as well. Visiting Germany two to three times a year, they maintain personal relationships with every estate they have selected.

Rudy Weist , the producers and winemakers were all in agreement that they expect the yield in this year to be the smallest of the last 25 years. Its was approximately 25 percent less than last year's harvest but the Quality of the 2010 vintage is considered to be good. They also added The 2010 vintage wines will be less full-bodied than those of previous years.

There were many standouts at this very intimate affair with a who’s who in attendance to be the first to sample the latest vintage from Germany. If you were looking for scores there were plenty of them to be found. From Karthauserhof Estate the 2009 Reisling Spatlese , Eltelsbacher Karthauserhofberg with a 94 rating from Wine Spectator was a very nice treat even though it was from the previous vintage. Looking at 2010 there were many standouts in what promises to be a very nice vintage.

Schloss Lieser estates caught the attention of many with their mouthwatering 2010 Reilsing Spatlese “Erste Lage” Lieser Niederberg Helden . For those who enjoy their German wines on the dryer side, Pfeffingen Estates did not disappoint with a very nice 2010 Scheurebe Dry, Estate. Schloss Schonborn had a large selection of 2009 and 2010 Vintages. Their 2010 Riesing Dry, Estate was a nice easy drinking wine and showed why this estate is well known. Schloss Schonborn also treated us with a large selection of Library Wines. Their 1990 Riesling Spatlese Medium Dry was a fine example of how Riesling handles ageing.

This was not just about Rieslings but about showing off the versatility of German wines. Rose , Pinot Gris , Pinot Blanc and Pinot Noir wines provided a nice showcase to add to the many Rieslings young and old being sampled at this event.

Over all we found the 2010 Vintage white wines are characterized by the typical fresh fruitiness we would expect but also crispness which is so highly esteemed world wide as well as being less full bodied. After meeting the esteemed winemakers who few many miles and sampling their latest work of artistry, we will look for the 2010 vintages on wine lists and know we will not be disappointed .

Double Helix Wine & Whiskey Lounge sets the bar higher at Town Square in Las Vegas

Double Helix has been in Las Vegas at the Palazzo Resort since 2008 . Founded  by Raymond Nisi, Lucky Metalios and Jonathan Stern, Double Helix has been a hit for tourists and locals alike. In 2010, Double Helix launched its private label line of wines, a Chardonnay and a Merlot from California. They plan to expand the line in 2011 to include a Muscat dessert wine and a high end Italian red blend, as well as an assortment of “old-school” bottled sodas.

With the success of their Palazzo location, Double Helix has just opened their latest location at Town Square in Las Vegas. Double Helix Wine & Whiskey Lounge is the newest addition to Town Square’s busy movie theater corridor. Located in space formerly occupied by The Grape in the intersection shared by Blue Martini and Yard House, Double Helix Wine & Whiskey is now open. The 2,800-square-foot space features a full bar that offers 30 unique wines by the glass, 50 whiskies, sampler flights, and Double Helix’s signature “winetails”. Chef Doug Vega, whose previous experience includes Daniel Boulud’s DB Brasserie, has created a wine and spirit-friendly small-plates menu.

Guests can enjoy shareable, melt-in your- mouth dishes that satisfy any craving for $15 or less. The diverse menu includes cheeseboards, flatbreads, and a range of gourmet comfort food dishes like shrimp and grits, bacon-wrapped figs, banana-Nutella crepes and beignets.

“We feel this is a perfect way to expand our brand,” says owner and managing partner Ray Nisi, “I like that we can capture new people who may not know us,” Nisi says, “that we can bring them in and make them fans.”

Walking in , the first thing that you cannot miss is their new outside patio that includes a fire pit for the cold months and misters for your comfort as you sip and enjoy and ultra-comfortable lounge-style furniture.
Lucky Ray

A real wine bar in our opinion should have a feel that is classy and comfortable. Double Helix’s newest venue captures it all with a large beautiful bar and 16 Enomatic Machines where guests can explore high end wines from around the world ounces at a time. Comfortable tables can accommodate parties of any size. Raymond Nisi has always prided himself in finding quality staff for both Front and Back of the house. Many staff at his newest creation have years of experience and have joined Double Helix Wine and Whisky Bar from some of the finest venues in Las Vegas.

Arancini

Chef Doug Vega and Raymond Nisi have created a palate pleasing menu that would satisfy any craving you may have. We started off with TARO CHIPS: Which are homemade with sea salt and harissa – lime sauce. After a nice start, Raymond suggested his personal favorite, ARANCINI . The Arancini is a mouthwatering creation of Risotto Fritters with roasted mushroom and white truffle aloli.

This dish, in a word was, WOW! . Looking over the menu, our eyes were drawn to our next dish. HEIRLOOM TOMATO & BURRATA CHEESE. This dish did not look like what we expected. Our eyes darted with excitement when we saw the Heirloom Tomato, Burrata Cheese, Arugula Pesto wrapped in prosciutto and topped with rich balsamic. Very eye pleasing and tasty as well, who would have thought we could have eaten Heirloom Tomato and Cheese with our fingers!

Heirloom Tomato and Burrata Cheese

Taking time out to enjoy a Lucky Ray signature cocktail, we looked over the menu once again. How could we possibly pass up the THREE LITTLE PIGGIES?. This fun dish of bacon wrapped mini Kobe dogs in puff pastry and mustard sauce is sure to bring a smile to anyone’s face. Sweet somethings peaked our interest and we had to indulge in two of them. PASSION FRUIT MOUSSE with Chocolate and berries was an explosion of flavor and actually paired nicely with the Lucky Ray. The ICE CREAM SUNDAE SAMPLER with a selection of chocolate waffle tulip and sugar crisp is a great dish for the summer months.

Three Little Piggies

The Menu also features a nice selection of Cheese and Charcuterie plates or you can create your own with Artisnal Cheese and flavorful Charcuterie selections that are sure to please. Double Helix also offers Paninis and even SOUTHERN SHRIMP & GRITS with bacon, green onion, cheddar, mushrooms and tomato gravy. Double Helix Wine & Whisky Lounge is a perfect combination of atmosphere, good quality dishes, boutique wines, interesting Whiskeys and a knowledgeable professional staff. Town Square as many great dining choices and Double Helix is sure to take its place amongst the best in the city.

The lounge is open at 3:00pm daily, plus lunch Thursday-Sunday. Daily happy hours from 3:30pm-7:30pm will feature 1/2 off select flights, tasting plates and desserts. Moviegoers can show their Rave Motion Pictures ticket to receive glasses of Double Helix Wine for $5. Both wine and whiskey enthusiasts can look forward to barrel tastings, visiting producers, tastings and pairing dinners. The patio will also be available for private tastings and special events.
Passion Fruit Mousse

Double Helix has even more plans for Las Vegas. In early September, they will debut Bottles & Burgers by Double Helix, a 5,000-square-foot, double-terraced addition to Summerlin’s Tivoli Village. “It’s our biggest project to date,” Nisi says. As its name implies, the casual concept will feature inspired burger creations with half-bottles of wine, bottles of beer, and Double Helix’s own line of “old-school” bottled sodas. We look forward to yet another great venue by Raymond Nisi and his partners that is sure to set a new standard in Summerlin.

The Bellagio Resort and Williams Selyem Winery team up for an evening of Epicurean Delight

The Bellagio Resort and Casino has long been known to the world for setting the standard for luxury, and fine dining. Recently the Bellagio and their Director of Wine Jason Smith MS have put together their Epicurean Epicenter series. This one of a kind series teams up one of Bellagio’s world class Chefs in their Tuscany “studio “ kitchen for a multi-course paired luncheon or dinner. The Williams Selyem dinner brought Bob Cabral their Executive Winemaker to Las Vegas and joined Le Cirque’s Executive Chef Gregory Pugin for a six course paired dinner featuring world class French cuisine and very highly rated Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from this legendary producer.

Executive Chef Gregory Pugin , Le Cirque Bellagio

Of course, the only way to get our palates ready for this experience was to enjoy some bubbles. The Bellagio and Chef Pugin were off to a fabulous start with CANAPES ET HORS-D’CEUVRES ASSORTS “LE CIRGUE”. Paired with Williams Selyem Blanc De Noir Sparkling Wine, Russian River Valley 2005 this beginning was just right for what was to come.

LANGOUSTINES AU CAVIAR

Langoustines Au Caviar

Citrus-Marinated New Zealand Langoustines, Osetra Caviar, Apple & Vodka Gelee. Paired with Williams Selyem Hawk Hill Chardonnay, Russian River Valley2005

The Langoustines and Caviar paired nicely with the creamy mouth feel of this extended aged Chardonnay. As the dish was placed in front, aromas of the dish combined with citrus and mocha from the Chardonnay that made our mouths water before we even took the first bite.

LE FLETAN D ALASKA
Executive Chef Gregory Pugin , Le Cirque Bellagio

Potato-Crusted Halibut, Celery Root & Mustard of Meaux Puree, Sause Vieux Balsamique. Paired with Williams Selyem Westside Road Neighbors Pinot Noir 2007

The first Pinot Noir, with its aromas of Cherry, plum, rose and clove gave way to a palate of big flavors of cherry, blackberry and even cassis with a long oaky finish and med tannins.

L’AGNEAU DU COLORADO
L Agneau Du Colorado

Espelette-crusted Lamb Chop , Taggiasche Olive Panisse , Piquillo Puree, Farcie of Spring Vegeitables. Paired with Williams Selyem Rochioli Riverblock Vineyard Pinot Noir Russian River Valley 2004 and Williams Selyem Hirsch Vineyard Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast.

Two big, bold Pinot Noirs from Sonoma and Russian River with aromas of Cherries rose and cola lead into a palate of concentrated flavors of red berries, earth, spice and pretty big tannins for a long finish. This dish, with its perfectly cooked Espelette crusted Lamb chop and vegetables was the best pairing of the night bringing out the earthy , mineral qualities in the Pinot Noir and balanced acidity in the dish.

LES FROMAGES

Les Fromages

L’Epoisse , Vieux Comte , Saint Marcellin paired with Williams Selyem Allen Vineyard Pinot Noir 1999.

Lovely Cheese and a 1999 Vintage Pinot Noir, Does it get any better? The Allen Pinot Noir, 1999 vintage with notes of cherry, raspberry, spice, soft tannins and long finish is what a Pinot Noir from this area should be like and was our favorite of the evening.

POT DE CRÈME AU CHOCOLAT

Chocolate Pot de Crème , Cardamom Emulsion , Pop Rock Marshmallows

Most dinners need a “period “at the end. This dish was so pleasing that one could not help but beg for more. A lovely way to end a magnificent dinner.

Epicurean Epicenter is the perfect name for this culinary series at the Bellagio. A dinner that featured a James Beard finalist in Chef Gregory Pugin of the renown Le Cirque , Winemaker Bob Cabral from the highly respected Williams and Selyem Winery and Bellagio’s own Jason Smith MS shows why Bellagio is a Epicenter of Epicurean Excellence. We look forward to see what the Bellagio will do for their next event in the series.

An in-depth Historical Retrospective of Bordeaux: Chateau Lagrange & Chateau D’ Issan

It has been known almost from the beginning of recorded time that Food & Wine bring people together. In more modern times when people get together they share ideas and educate each other on their particular region or expertise. Many Food & Wine events offer guests the opportunity to learn from world experts in their field. Pebble Beach Food & Wine does this as good or better than any event we have attended. Education is always important and a foundation of building blocks to a lifetime of knowledge.

The very luxurious Spanish Bay Inn at Pebble Beach was the site of an educational experience that we will take with us for a lifetime. Pebble Beach Food & Wine offered us “The Bold & Beautfil Bordeaux: A Historical Retrospective of Chateau Lagrange and Chateau D’ Issan. A vertical tasting of two famous classified growths in Bordeaux. We joined the tasting panel of Anthony Gold Author, Emmanuel Cruse Chateau D’Issan , Matthieu Bordes Chateau Lagrange , Robert Smith MS Bellagio Las Vegas and Robin Kelly O’ Connor Head of Wine , Americas, Christie’s for an early morning exploration of these prestigious Third Growths from Bourdeaux.

Before we get into the “meat” of the experience, it is best to take a quick look at Bordeaux and the regions of Chateau Legrange and Chateau D’ Issan. Bordeaux has about 116,160 hectares (287,000 acres) of vineyards, 57 appellations, 10,000 wine-producing châteaux and 13,000 grape growers. With an annual production of approximately 960 million bottles,[6] Bordeaux produces large quantities of everyday wine as well as some of the most expensive wines in the world. Included among the latter are the area's five premier cru (first growth) red wines (four from Médoc and one, Château Haut-Brion, from Graves), established by the Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855. A traditional Bordeaux vinification is carried out in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. The total capacity of the vat room is around 10 000 hectolitres, with 63 vats each containing 66 to 220 hectolitres. Frequent tastings determine the vatting time of between 15 and 25 days depending on the tannic development in the fermenting wines. The temperature of fermentation never exceeds 28/30°C to ensure preservation of the finesse and fruitiness. The pumping-overs are also of moderate intensity and limited in frequency for the same reason. The selection of press wine is performed “vat by vat ” , allowing a wider choice range during the blend tastings. Bordeaux and its vinification methods are much more complicated that we mentioned previously , but we wanted to get a little background before we jump right in it.

Chateau Lagrange

Chateau Lagrange is located in St-Julien. Situated on two plateaus between Pauillac and Margaux, the wine region of St-Julien has the smallest wine production of the four major regions in the Médoc. The region is divided into essentially two areas - the riverside estates around the village of St.Julien and the southern estates around the village of Beychevelle where the areas Cru Bourgeois are also grouped. The waters of the Gironde estuary have a warming influence on the climate which, coupled with the south-easterly exposure of most vineyards, helps to fully ripen the Cabernet Sauvignon vines in this area.

St-Julien has the highest proportion of classified estates of all the regions in Bordeaux. They include the Second Growth Château Léoville-Las Cases, Château Léoville-Poyferré, Château Léoville Barton, Château Gruaud-Larose, and Château Ducru-Beaucaillou. The Third Growths Château Lagrange, Château Langoa Barton, Château Saint-Pierre, Château Talbot, Château Branaire-Ducru, and Château Beychevelle. These eleven classed growths account for nearly 80 percent of the entire region wine production.

Chateau D' Issan

Chateau D’ Issan is found in the Margaux appellation that encompasses the village of Margaux and the neighboring villages of Arsac, Labarde, Soussans and Cantenac. It is the most southerly of Médoc's appellations. The make almost entirely red wine, harvesting Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot grapes, with only a small amount of white wine made. This region has the thinnest soil in the region with the highest proportion of gravel that allows the soil to drain very well. The wines from this area are very susceptible to the overall quality of the vintage year and the weather effects during the growing season and harvest.

The area is home to more classified second and third growths than any other appellation as well as one first growth, Château Margaux. The region is also home to the second growths Château Rauzan-Ségla, Château Rauzan-Gassies, Château Durfort-Vivens, Château Lascombes, and Château Brane-Cantenac. The region's third growths include Château Kirwan, Château d'Issan, Château Giscours, Château Malescot St. Exupery, Château Cantenac-Brown, Château Boyd-Cantenac, Château Palmer, Château Desmirail, Château Ferriere and Château Marquis d'Alesme Becker. The three fourth growths are Château Pouget, Château Prieure-Lichine, Château Marquis de Terme. The two fifth growths are Château Dauzac and Château du Tertre. The area's Cru Bourgeois include Château Labégorce Zédé and Château Siran

CHATEAU LAGRANGE:

Chateau Lagrange as been a Classified Growth since 1855.. The property is located in the west of the Saint-Julien appellation right in the heart of the Médoc vineyards. Château Lagrange was known in the Middle Ages as the Noble House of Lagrange Montei. Records of the successive owners go back as far as 1631. In 1824 the total production was 120 barrels (12 000 cases). In 1842, the ex-Home Secretary to King Louis-Philippe, Count Duchatel, left his mark on the property and the Médoc by introducing a drainage system in the vineyard. The Count brought the annual production up to 300 barrels. This was a golden age for Lagrange, with the famous 1855 classification awarding the property the title of Third Classified Growth.

CHATEAU D’ ISSAN :

Chateau D’ Issan is s one of the oldest properties in the Medoc. In the late 1400's the property was called Teobon. It had a succession of famous owners until the 17th century when it became the possession of d'Essenault. He was a knight and a member of the parliament of Bordeaux. D'Essenault had a new castle constructed and improved the property until the French Revolution. At the time of the revolution, the estate was confiscated and put under the the administration of Gustave Roy.

The property continued to be improved through the period of the classification of 1855. At that time it was given the rank of 3rd growth. Monsieur Roy's heirs continued to maintain and improve the property until they sold it just prior to World War I in 1914. The estate suffered from neglect until 1945 when it was purchased by Monsieur and Madame Emmanuel Cruse. The property was in extremely poor condition in the vineyards and the buildings. There has been steady investment for 50 years and there is still work to be done to bring Chateau d'Issan to first rate condition. One improvement of particular note was the renovation of the aging cellars. This took place over a period from 1975 through 1988. The rest is history that brought this Chateau into current time with wines that have gotten the world’s attention for decades.

With the help of the prestigious panel we began our journey through Bordeaux and these Classified Third growths. Starting with the 2005 Vintage our palate pleasing journey began.

2005 Chateau Lagrange : Purple color in the glass . The nose is feminine and elegant, with red berries and flowers. The Palate was was concentrated with red flowers and berries with some smoke and a slight touch oak. On the finish, balanced tannins and a long finish were impressive..

2005 Chateau D’Issan . Many suggest that 1900 vintage may be better. However, this 2005 Vintage was very nice. A very deep purple color in the glass brought us to a nose of red flowers, licorice, currant, and smoke. These lovely aromas were confirmed on the palate with nice concentration, balanced acidity and a long finish. Still young, we cannot wait to try this 3-4 years and see its maturity

2003 Chateau Lagrange : The 2003 vintage was exceptionally warm. This 2003 is big, bold and not typical of a elegant Bordeaux .

2003 Chateau D’Issan : Issan’s 2003 exhibits this château’s classic, style along with big aromas of black currants, earth, spice and oak. Medium bodied in the glass with a nice finish. Both winemakers agreed that their 2003 Vintage would most likely not age more that 10 years. They also noted that 2003 was the first year that Acidification was allowed in Bordeaux.

2000 Chateau Lagrange : The 2000 vintage is one of those “Special “ Vintages that even the winemaker stated “if you think this is good now watch and see what is will be in 10 more years. This lovely Bordeaux was spicy , young and bursting with deep flavors of plum.

2000 Chateau D’ Issan : Just like the Lagrange 2000 , this Issan was full of flavors of plum and black currant. Ripe fruit and a long finish were signatures of this nice wine.

1995 Chateau D’ Issan : The 1995 vintage showed a deeper purple color in the glass. On the palate more ripe fruit that then younger vintages. It also showed is the very classic Château D’ Issan’s elegance and style. The 1995 Vintage can be drank now but as they explained, it still has much more to say for itself as the years go by. This was the first of the “older” vintages that really showed us the importance of ageing these very fine wines.

1996 Chateau Lagrange : In the glass the 1996 was dark red to purple . On the nose, ripe fruit was coming through and very nicely balanced in acidity, fruit and tannins. A nice palate with ripe red-fruit that was light and elegant. Much more fruit and complexity provide a longer finish than the younger vintages.

1990 Chateau Lagrange : In a word , this wine was Unbelievable. The blend of the 1990 is 44% each Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with 12% Petit Verdot added in to finish. This historic wine was full of black and red fruits, rich and elegant with a finish that never seemed to end. This was classic Bordeaux and one of those wines we will remember for a lifetime.

1985 Chateau D’ Issan : The 1985 D’Issan nose was a perfume of lovely aromas of expressive red fruit , red flowers and currant . On the Palate elegant and soft flavors of red fruit, oak and smoke slide into a nice smooth long feminine finish with soft tannins and long lingering finish. Advice from all concerned on the panel, DRINK NOW !

Joining this distinguished panel tasting some of Bordeaux’s finest wines with a tradition that goes back centuries was a true educational experience. It just confirmed that one’s wine education is never over but a lifelong process of travel, tasting and reading about the ever changing world of wine.

Pebble Beach Food & Wine, a Legendary Epicurean Experience on one of the world’s most Picturesque Coastlines

Cuisineist Editor-In-Chief Elaine Harris

Pebble Beach, the Spanish Bay Inn and the Lodge have been known throughout the world for decades for its resort lifestyle and what many consider one of the most picturesque coastlines in the world. The fourth Pebble Beach Food & Wine was an experience that words and pictures really don’t do the event as a whole justice; you really need to be there. Upon checking in on the first day, guests are given the event program. It actually resembles a small novel. The 257 page , 8 ½ by 11 , high gloss ‘epicure’ IV Pebble Beach Food & Wine Presented by American Express Publishing Publication contains Chef Profiles , Schedule of Events , Interviews with Celebrity Chefs , Master Sommeliers and even recipes. Just leafing through the ‘epicure’ gave an overall view of this very upscale event where only the very best in Food and Wine is presented.

Starting with The Opening night Reception at the Spanish Bay Inn, guests enjoyed dishes from 23 celebrity Chefs and sampled wines, many from the world’s top 100 producers. And if you like bubbles , The events Bubble Lounge featured Champagne Krug , Dom Perignon , Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame just to name a few.

And then there were the Celebrity Chefs. Guest sampled culinary genius from Graham Elliot , Roy Yamaguchi , Claudine and Jacques Pepin , Shawn McClain and Grant MacPherson as well as many more names that your are sure to know. After seeing how the Pebble Beach Food & Wine was kicking off we could not even imagine what two full days of events would bring.

The first full day gave us a wide variety of choices to start the day. But where do you begin with events that feature Champagne Louis Roederer Cristal or dessert with Top Chef Yigit Pura or a wine seminar and tasting on Super Tuscans or an interactive lesson in blending? We joined Master Sommelier Andrea Robinson for her Breakfast of Champs : Champagne , Bacon , Eggs and Caviar . Tasting some of the world’s finest caviar along with Champagne and Sparkling wines as Andrea Robinson hosted, was a wonderful way to start the day. Do you even think about lunch when the mid day hour tolls after a breakfast like that ? Sure you do when at Pebble Beach Food & Wine! .

Chef Mark Estee , PINTADE TRIO  , Breast , Crepinette and Agnolotti

The selection of luncheons included a Belgian Beer lunch, another featured Sustainable Delicacies from the Sea and then there was the Chefs Table Lunch with Michael Chiarello and Graham Elliot ; there was something for everyone.

We decided on the lunch at Club XIX at The Lodge overlooking the world famous 18th hole at Pebble Beach. Five Chefs treated us to a 5 course lunch and Champagne Reception featuring ‘REAL’ food outdoors with the 18th hole at Pebble Beach as our backdrop underneath a beautiful blue, cloudless sky.

The 18th Hole at Pebble Beach

Pebble Beach Food &Wine kept the hits coming in the afternoon with a Family Meal with Tyler Florence , and Chateau de Beaucastel pouring their historic wines from Chateauneuf-du-Pape and other wine events . We stopped in on Laura Werlin and “ A love affair with Cheese and Wine” for an educational experience on cheese and wine pairings and lovely wines from Domaine Serene . As the first day moved into the evening hours, guests could get formal and spend the Evening with Michelin Stars for an epic meal or enjoy Food and Wine Magazine’s Chef Alumni dinner or even some Haute Cuisine with Champagne Krug. Just experiencing the first day was a foodie and wine aficionado’s version of heaven and the Pebble Beach Food & Wine was just getting started.

On the second day at Pebble Beach Food &Wine, events were at full steam . Guest’s could start the day with Tom Colicchio , explore Burgundy’s Grand Crus and even a Pinot Noir Blind tasting. We found our interest drawn to a Bordeaux Retrospective featuring Chateau Lagrange and Chateau D’ Issan where we began with the 2005 vintage and worked our way back to 1985 .
A very nice vertical to start off the day ! Lunch time brought guests a lively Interactive lunch with Guy Fieri and then off to the Saturday Grand Tasting where we strolled amongst over 300 wineries and 25 celebrity Chefs.

Chef Ressul Rasallat

Evening fell upon Pebble Beach but that in no way meant the day was over. With dinners featuring The Stars of Napa Valley and Food & Wine Magazine’s Best Sommeliers , a Tribute to Tom Colicchio and of course the Grand Finale Dinner featuring Charlie Trotter , Michel Richard and Gary Danko . BergevinLane Wines from Washigton State Impress Many at Morels French SteakHouse in the Palazzo Resort

In the beginning months of 2001, Annette Bergevin and Amber Lane co-founded and created Bergevin Lane Vineyards with Gary Bergevin (Annette’s father). The goal for Amber and Annette was to “leave the rat race behind” in California and get back to what they each wanted from life. Annette wanted to be close to her family and long-time friends, and Amber wanted to take on new challenges and continue her personal path of growth and education.

The winery officially opened its doors in May 2003; the winery is a 20,000 square foot “modern industrial” building located in downtown Walla Walla. Although BLV's production is 11,000 cases, there is a capacity to produce over 22,000 cases of wine at the winery. Winemaker Steffan Jorgensen is originally from Denmark and brings experience in winemaking from France, Chile, and Sonoma, Ca. All of the day to day winemaking operations and production are under Steffan’s supervision. This group of “friends” has combined their respective talents to produce some very high quality wines.

Recently, Amber Lane made a stop in Las Vegas to show off her wines and what a better place to do it was at Morels French Steakhouse in The Palazzo Resort and Casino.

Alexandre Brard and Amber Lane

Wine director Alexandre Brard recently joined Morels and he immediately began to develop plans to create new ways to introduce guests to boutique wines from around the globe. “Bergevin Lane offers some amazing, high-scoring wines,” said Brard. “These wines are amazing and we are pleased to have them come to Morels to introduce their label to our guests.”

We met with the very charming Amber Lane and she began to take us through the wines. The first wine that we tried was the BergevinLane 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley. Amber explained that 2008 was a compelling and complicated year . Compelling because of the balance the wines were showing already at this very early stage and complicated because of the somewhat cooler season. The cooler temperatures made for very intentional and thoughtful picking decisions and it required them to wait for the fruit to ripen before the frost took over. All of the fruit ripened later than normal but the longer hang time accumulated very complex flavors in the grapes. Nice and balanced, higher acidities and lower alcohol wines are known for their silkiness and elegance.

This lovely Cabernet that is a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot and 3% Malbec to finish it off. The 2008 vintage was aged 20 months in 87.5% French and 12.5% American Oak and only had a production of 769 cases. In the glass , deep red to purple colors show off this medium bodied wine. On the nose , classic notes of cassis , smoke and black fruit lead into the palate of mineral , blackberries and nicely balanced tannins for a long elegant finish. We can definitely see why Wine Advocate gave this nice Cabernet 92 points and we cannot agree more.

Next up from Amber was the BergevineLane 2006 Oui Deux Syrah Wahluke Slope. Amber told us that 2006 was a fabulous year with consistent heat and sun combined with persistent winds that cooled the vineyards during the day, which made for optimum ripening factors. These influences combined low nightly temperatures and balanced yields that provided grapes of great concentrated flavors and very fine-grained ripe tannins. The 2006 Syrah is an interesting Blend of 95% Syrah with 5% Viognier that was a surprising touch from the winemaker. The 2006 Oui Deux was aged 14 months in 33% new oak , 75% French and 25% Eastern European Oak and only 218 cases were produced. In the glass , deep dark purple colors show through with a medium body. On the nose , red and white floral notes flow into surprising citrus aromas and then dark fruit. On the palate classic spice flavors of white pepper , blackberries , coco and tobacco give way slowly for a long elegant finish. Wine Advocate gave the 2006 Oui Deux a well deserved 91 points

Over all , BergevineLane wines that we sampled were solid and represented the AVAs well. The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley was a stand out for us . The 2006 Oui Deux Syrah was nice and because of the Viognier eventhough its only 5 % gives it a more feminine touch. If you prefer a lighter Syrah this one is for you.

It is always nice to visit and sample wines from small boutique producers because as we have stated in the past , you can taste the passion and work that went into these wines in every sip. BergevinLane is no exception to that rule. They are definitely worth enjoying. For more information on BergevinLane please visit www.bergevinlane.com.

World of Pinot Noir 2011 , a detailed look ( and taste ) from the Media Room

The World of Pinot Noir. over the last 11 years has earned the reputation as one of the foremost Wine Focus Events in the country with Growers , Winemakers and Master Sommeliers from all over the world converging on the Cliffs Resort in Shell Beach California every March. Each year  fine , young , upcoming stars producing very nice Pinot Noirs and we visit with Icons of the industry and sample their time tested works of art. Each Day was different for us. The First day was full of pleasant surprises from some future winemaking stars. The second day we revisited many of the legends that have been at the fore front of winemaking in ,many cases for over 30 years and right up to the last day , pleasant , palate pleasing surprises kept coming .

The World of Pinot Noir provides journalists a media room where we have the opportunity to do a focus tasting of every wine being pouring on that day. This is a wonderful chance to really look for those “special” producers and really take long look at their wines.

Ryan Zotovich
ZOTOVICH CELLARS: Sta Rita HillsThe Zotovich Family Cellars was probably the nicest surprise we had over the whole weekend. After tasting the Zotovich Family Cellars Estate Pinot Noir Sta Rita Hills 2008 in the media room we had to go “in search “ of these wines at the Grand Tasting by The Sea. Walking up to the table we saw a 20’s something young man pouring the Pinot Noir. After speaking with him , he was non oher than winemaker Ryan Zoltovich who explained his background. He stated he is a Cal Poly Grad and for the last three years has been the cellar master for the legendary Sea Smoke Cellars.  He left in July to work for his family in their estate vineyard. In a word , we were impressed with Ryan and his Estate Pinot Noir 08 which was one of the best we had all weekend. Ryan has the potential to be a new and rising star in the Sta Rita Hills http://zotovichcellars.com/cm/Home.html

SEA SMOKE CELLARS :
Sea Smoke Winery needs no introduction to any wine lover. They don’t have a tasting room , and only offer periodic, by appointment, Vineyard tours and have an allocation list ! Having the opportunity to visit with winemaker Don Schroder and taste these very special wines is always a treat. For years, vintners have coveted a stretch of land in the western end of Santa Barbara’s Santa Rita Hills AVA known to have the perfect microclimate, soils, and exposure to grow world-class Pinot Noir. In 1999, fulfilling a long-held dream of owner Bob Davids, this sought-after stretch of land became Sea Smoke Vineyard. We enjoyed the Southing 2008 Sea Smoke Sta Rita Hills and all we can say is that it lives up to the long history and reputation of this legendary vineyard . If you are looking for a true “standard” in Pinot Noir , Sea Smoke is a must ! https://www.seasmokecellars.com/index.asp

Cheri La Valle-Sinor and Mike Sinor

SINOR-LaValle WINES:
Founded in 1997 by Winemaker Mike Sinor and his wife Cheri LaValee-Sinor , this winery is making some very nice Pinot Noir and got our attention . The 2008 Pinot Noir Talley-Rincon Vineyard a classic example of a Pinot Noir from Arroyo Grande . It scored an amazing 93 points last year has a production of only 73 cases This husband and wife team are well on their way and you can taste the dedication to growing a producing high quality hand crafted Pinot Noir with every sip. http://www.sinorlavallee.com/

Ken Brown

KEN BROWN WINES:
When you talk about a true pioneer in winemaking one name that always comes up is Ken Brown and rightfully so. His first experience with Pinot Noir in what is now known as the Sta. Rita Hills came in 1976 when he met fellow pioneers Richard Sanford and Michael Benedict and tasted one of the first Pinot Noirs from the Sanford and Benedict Vineyard. Most of his career has been spent pursuing the elusive traits that make great Pinot Noir. From the early days at Zaca Mesa Winery and 20-year tenure at Byron Vineyard he has continued to experiment with clones, rootstocks, soils and winemaking techniques, exploring the tremendous potential for Pinot Noir in Santa Barbara County He launched Ken Brown label in 2003 and became excited about the vineyards and the wines that brought him to Santa Barbara County in the first place 30 years ago. His Ken Brown 2008 Pinot Noir Sta. Rita Hills was a classic Pinot Noir from one of premier Pinot Noir AVAs in the US. And what else would you expect from a real pioneer but only the best that the last 30 years have taught him. http://www.kenbrownwines.com/focus

Rebecca and Peter Work

AMPELOS CELLARS:

Great wines have a great story and one of the greatest is Peter and Rebecca Work owners of Ampelos Cellars. A cancelled meeting in New York on September 11th 2001 changed their lives and sent them to Lompoc, California. They bought 82 acres in 1999 and moved to “ The Ranch” in 2002. The first 15 acres were planted in 2001 and in 2005 expanded with another 10 acres. Coming from the corporate world , they spent the first four years learning how to farm the land, prune the vines and coax them onto the trellis. They also learned to nurture the soil and prepare it for the first harvest. Ampelos is truly a small boutique winery producing about 3500 cases a year and doing very well at it. Their lovely 2007 Lambda is their “focus “ estate Pinot Noir. A very classic blend of six clones: 115, 667, 777, 828, Pommard4 and 2A and represents their second year of organic and biodynamic farming.  The Lambda is has all the signature notes of the Sta Rita hills and has scored 91 points Tanzer IWC 93 + gold medal Tastings.com 90-93 points Wine Spectator. Ampelos is all about love and passion for the land and should not be missed.

John and Steve Draginette , Brandon Sparks-Gillis

DRAGONETTE CELLARS :
A winery we have been watching literally from their inception is Dragontte Cellars. John and Steve Dragonette and close friend Brandon Sparks-Gillis formed Dragonette Cellars in order to pursue a long-held dream to produce wines of the utmost quality and purity from the finest vineyards in Santa Barbara County and the Central Coast. It looks like to us they have achieved it. Their 2008 Pinot Noir from the Iconic Fiddlesticks vineyard Sta Rita Hills is a Pinot Noir that speaks to you about the AVA. Pinot Noirs from the Sta Rita Hills have a special signature and Dragonette has done an excellent job in winemaking and staying true to the Sta Rita Hills signature flavors. http://dragonettecellars.com/

Greg La Follette
LA FOLLETTE WINES:
La Follette is a winery that we found on the last day and are very glad we did. Launched in 2010 They source wines from many of the North Coast’s finest vineyards and it shows. Winemaker Greg La Follette could not have said it better when he said “being a winemaker means forgetting about ego” he added that “The key is listening closely to what the vineyard wants to express and trusting that you can help to gently guide that process”. After visiting a speaking with winemakers from all over the country that is one lesson that we learned many years ago. Great wines and made in the vineyard! We placed a very big star in our notes on the 2008 La Follette Pinot Noir Manchester Ridge Vineyard Mendocino Ridge. Using Dijon clones of 777, 115 and 114 aged 10 months in French Oak they produced only 214 cases of this palate pleasing Pinot Noir.

Simone Sequeria

Assistnat winemaker Simone Sequeria was on hand and took us through their Pinot Noirs . She explained that she is a California native and has spent a decade in the wine industry, working in virtually every aspect of the business, including hospitality, distribution, lab analysis and cellar production. She’s also worked abroad, picking Pinot in the Cotes de Beaune for the excellent 2002 vintage of Burgundy and making Malbec at Vina Cobos in Mendoza, Argentina in 2006. With Greg and Simone working in the winery, La Follette has a great future if what we tasted at WOPN is any indication.

The World of Pinot Noir features some of the finest Pinot Noir in the world. This event puts legendary winemakers side by side with the young all sharing their skill and love for this very special varietal. We sampled literally hundreds of Pinot Noir and all represented their AVA and country well. A few wineries stood out for us over the three day period for a variety of reasons. But the end result is that these wines stood out for us in their quality and what we feel a Pinot Noir should be and they best represented that. We look forward to the 12th World of Pinot Noir next March and look to find some more ‘special’ finds among the best of the best.
